Long Live Sway DaSafo (1982 - 2026)
On September 17th, 2026, the sad news of, UK Hip-Hop pioneer, Sway DaSafo's passing (only 12 days after his 44th birthday).
If you happened to be lucky enough to grow up during the 'Channel U' era, in the early to mid 00's, then you would know exactly who Sway is and just how important he was to the UK scene at the time.
A genuine talent who could easily draw you in with, not only his incredible flow, but his unmatched creativity which was highlighted on his superb 'This is My Promo' Vol. 1 and 2 mixtapes which, even to this very day, are two of the greatest mixtapes ever pressed on to a compact disc!!!
Whether it was through his own solo work, collaborations or guest features (his show stealing verse on The Mitchell Brothers 'Harvey Nicks' anyone?) he was one of the best at what he did. It was no wonder that, in 2005, he became the first unsigned UK Hip-Hop artist to win a MOBO award for 'Best Hip-Hop Act' and he'd eventually end up signing with Akon's Konvict label taking his talent to a worldwide audience.
Sway wasn't just respected but truly loved by his peers and his passing is one that has taken a toll on the UK Hip-Hop and Grime scenes.
One Instagram user posted that Sway's death was like "a part of the teenage me dying" which felt beyond true for those who first remember seeing the 'Flo Fashion' video on 'Channel U' for the first time.
Sway's influence, and legacy, is one that can be still felt today and it's certainly one that will live forever.
